Woolies plans to enter insurance market

WOOLWORTHS has unveiled plans to push into the insurance market as the retail juggernaut plays catch-up with rival Coles.

With the major supermarkets already locking horns over cut-price bread and milk, Woolworths revealed it would offer insurance covering everything from cars to the family cat.

First off the rank will be life and pet insurance policies, with home and car policies in following months.

But the products will be sold through call centres and online only, not in-store.

Woolworths head of insurance George Hughes said while the pricing would be competitive, products would not be bargain basement.

“We very much view our role as that of a market challenger to provide everyday Australians with access to insurance products that may previously have been out of their reach,” Mr Hughes said.
