To make matters worse, many of these policies were marketed as “lifetime” plans which would be automatically renewed – and policy levels reset – provided customers paid their annual premiums.

This move follows an earlier “test case” by the Financial Ombudsman, which ruled that Halifax had to continue to provide insurance for the next three years for a dog that had a recurring skin complaint.

The Ombudsman said Lloyds had “not handled fairly its decision to withdraw from the pet insurance market” and it criticised the marketing of these policies.

Letters are now being sent to affected policyholders, with the view to reinstating this insurance by the end of June. These policies will only be available to those whose pets have a medical condition or who have previously claimed on these policies.

The majority of the 25,000 pet owners who had this insurance should be able to get cover elsewhere, as their pets remain in good health.

Lloyds said the bank won’t be selling this insurance to new customers. It said those who needed to make a claim in the interim should contact the bank.

A spokesperson from Lloyds Banking Group said: “We are writing to all of our Halifax and Lloyds TSB pet insurance customers who have pets with pre-existing medical conditions to confirm that we are aiming to offer them a completely new policy.
