Huntsville, Ala. (WAAY)– Having a pet is so wonderful, but it can also be very expensive. Pet insurance is one of the most overlooked benefits, but it comes in handy, certainly when you’re faced with a big bill.

It’s important to get pet insurance while your animal is young. Once your pet develops pre- existing conditions, insurance may not cover the cost of certain surgeries and medical treatments.

“For most, 90 percent of animals, something will happen in their lifetime where you’re going to want to have that insurance to help you out” says Dr. Knight of Hampton Cove Animal Hospital.

According to the US Pet Ownership and Demographics Sourcebook, in 2007, the average annual vet cost was around $ 350 for dogs and close to $ 200 for cats.

“It’s common for labs or larger breed dogs to tear a ligament in their knee. It’s like a football injury in people. That surgery is going to cost them $ 3,000 to fix” says Knight.
