Pet insurance company announces top five health conditions for small-breed dogs

When it comes to dogs, apparently, big risks come in small packages.

That’s the conclusion one might draw after reading through a list of the five health conditions that affect small dogs more often than large-dog breeds.

The list, drawn from the database of pet insurance provider Trupanion, includes the following conditions: 

  • Medial Luxating Patella
  • Intervertebral Disk Disease (IVDD)
  • Pancreatitis
  • Conditions relating to the eyes
  • Conditions relating to the mouth

Some of the conditions can be very expensive to treat and can occur at any age in a dog’s life.

A luxating patella, common among Chihuahuas, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and Pomeranians, costs an average of $ 1,200 in veterinary bills during a given year.
