BLOOMINGTON — A sick pet quickly can become very expensive, which is why financial concerns often are part of a family’s decision about euthanasia.

Pet insurance and “care credit” options both are available to help with veterinary costs; “care credit” is basically a specialized credit card that families can use to cover pet-related costs.

The Humane Society of the United States also suggests looking at groups that offer veterinary care assistance; getting a second opinion; offering to work in exchange for treatment; or using clinics at veterinary schools.

Veterinarian Romanie Walter said families should check on coverage, costs and exclusions of pet care insurance, which can vary by company and breed.

“The sooner you start, the younger the dog when you start, the more beneficial (insurance) is,” said Walter.
